small h.

We learn about big H history in school
Events that shape the world
Great women and men placed
At just the right moment
Or making the moment
through sheer force of will.

Yet every day we witness
Small h history practiced
In the unwritten text
Of the book of life.

We say hello and goodbye
Wave at the people in cars
Open doors for others
take the lady bug outside
Bring misdelivered mail
To the neighbor next door
Pick up some loose trash
And put it away
Slow down for
The anxious squirrel.

Write a poem on a blog
that no one may ever read.

Night Light.

They are finally out
The fireflies;
I was wondering
If they would skip a year;
Yet the windless nights arrive
Better late than never.

I walked late tonight
Out amongst the dark life,
Honeysuckle air surrounds
bringing memories of childhood;
The wonder of it all
Then and now.

The fat toad waits patiently
under pooling streetlights
Not knowing why the gnats come
Only that they do.

Now and then fireflies light on me
a planet moving thru their Perseides;
A momentary tree invading their world
I move on as do they
The dark and quiet
A silent witness
Closes the door behind.
